American Medical Association (AMA) Biography

NC to the question "Should Abortion Be Legal?"

“The AMA is neither pro or con regarding abortion. No ‘position’ [pro or con] should be ascribed to the AMA.”

Email to from AMA Media & Editorial, May 23, 2014

[Editor’s Note: Prior to the AMA’s May 23, 2014 “Not Clearly Pro or Con” position above, the organization made a “Pro” statement in its Dec. 19, 2013 joint amicus brief from the AMA and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in support of affirmance in Planned Parenthood v. Abbott which stated in part: “[We] oppose legislative interference with the practice of medicine and a woman’s relationship with her doctor… Access to safe and legal abortion is an important aspect of women’s health care. Abortion is one of the safest medical procedures performed in the United States.”

Prior to that Dec. 19, 2013 “Pro” statement, two official AMA policies, AMA Policy H-5.990 (affirmed 2009) and AMA Policy H-5.995 (affirmed 2010), expressed a “Not Clearly Pro or Con” position.]
